Why Wait for Connection? How We Build Relationships, Recognition, and a One-Team Mindset at Standard Bank Offshore
In Relationship Management, connection is everything. But, for me, and certainly at Standard Bank Offshore (SBO), real connection goes deeper than a good conversation with a good outcome. It’s about how you show up in every interaction—consistently, authentically, and with intent. In doing this, you will build the kind of trust that makes people want to share a laugh with you, partner with you, stay with you, and grow with you, because when relationships aren’t solely transactional, but more meaningful and personal, they have the power to move people—and businesses—forward.
When I walked through the doors of Standard Bank Offshore (SBO) after over a decade with my previous organisation, I knew I was stepping into something different. It was clear from the people, the culture, and the shared purpose, but what I didn’t anticipate was how naturally things would click and how quickly I would feel a sense that I’d made the right move for me. From the outside, I saw an organisation with a strong reputation, both as a corporate brand and an employer, involved in meaningful initiatives and deeply connected to the markets critical to the Isle of Man and Africa. Once inside, I discovered just how well-founded that reputation was. Not just in the work we do, but in how we work together.
Why Relationships Make the Difference at SBO
It’s easy to fall into a routine within the banking industry, products are similar and services overlap. But the real differentiator—the thing that consistently shifts outcomes—is relationships.
At SBO, we’re structured in a way that actually supports that. Relationship Managers aren’t boxed in or handed directives to meet targets. We’re trusted to take ownership and build relationships in a way that reflects our individual strengths and, more importantly, best serves our clients and the people we work with.
This approach, for me, conveys that with clear guidance for safeguarding and shared purpose, formality isn’t defined as one thing, and allows for authenticity. It allows for human application to interaction, and for me, that’s being present, approachable, and building trust with clients and colleagues. As Relationship Managers, clients choose to work with us because they believe in how we work, and that trust is something we take seriously—because the organisation also trusts and enables us to own these relationships and do business the right way, every day. Freedom to show up as who you are and build relationships in your own way creates a ripple effect. It becomes the reason why people want to connect with you, again and again.
Knowing what I know now, it allows me to reflect on when I started out in the industry and how I spent the first couple months trying to be what I thought a client would want—traditionally formal, polished, rehearsed. With some time, I learned that what sets you apart is the confidence to be yourself, harness your knowledge and build relationships your way – these are the ones which will last. My lightbulb moment came when I realised that authenticity, paired with consistency and approachability, is what builds lasting relationships- walking into a room with your natural presence and a true-to-you tone is enough—that’s where real connection starts.
Quick Decisions, Real Autonomy, Big Impact
Structures that are set up for success, enable us to do our jobs well and allow relationships to flourish. At SBO, structures are well-linked and flat enough for decisions to be made expertly, and quickly. As a bank, compliance and regulation rule, and it’s our responsibility to build a team of people who understand the jurisdiction, the market, the client, and the context. These solid and essential foundations allow for speed, which matters when you're managing relationships. You can act with confidence and respond in real-time.
And it’s not just about speed—it’s about ownership. As a Relationship Manager, I’m trained and trusted to make calls that are right for my clients and for the business, backed by the availability of real time data and information on digital dashboards. That kind of frontline autonomy is rare in banking, but it’s standard here and it means that instead of spending time escalating, we spend time making a difference.
Built on Trust, Backed by Teams
SBO operates like a well-connected ecosystem. I might be the one in the room with the client, but I’m never working alone. From compliance to client onboarding, and account opening—every expert I work with plays a critical role in the relationship journey.
We’re united by a shared purpose: ‘Africa is our home, we drive her growth’. As well as a shared goal, to improve the lives of our clients and communities. As part of the Standard Bank Group, we are entrenched in the value of diverse perspectives and experiences, bringing a blend of expertise and collaboration to be stronger, more strategic, and have conversations from various cultural and exposure-based viewpoints—often with insights I wouldn’t have had if I wasn’t sitting next to someone who just moved to the island from Nigeria or Zambia, for instance.
It’s diversity in action, and it elevates everything we do.
Celebrating Wins, Big and Small
Recognition is a big part of SBO’s culture. There are formal ways to acknowledge great work—through our internal recognition system, or open dialogue environment where we can simply walk over and say ‘Thanks’. These examples are formal, and a way in which a business like SBO can invite a culture of recognition, but individually, I believe in using the power of small moments that leave a lasting memory. Whether it’s a conversation whilst making coffee, or a hello on the stairwell, by giving each other our time, I believe, there is nothing more valuable to make each other feel recognised.
Leading on, this applies to ourselves too. Taking the time to pause and reflect on progress matters. In this industry, it’s easy to focus on what’s next. There’s an understanding that appreciation fuels motivation, so, if you never pause to reflect, you lose sight of how far you’ve come and where you are heading.
One Team. One Dream.
There’s a real sense at SBO that success is shared. People are invested in not just helping you do your job, but in helping you thrive. The idea of “one team, one dream” encapsulates how we operate, showing up in the way people offer help without being asked, in how teams make space for each other, and how new joiners are integrated into the rhythm of the business from day one.
That kind of culture is rare. And it makes all the difference, not just in how we work, but in how we grow and how we win.
